Shepard is many things, including an extraordinary fighter. The player is constantly tasked with using Shepard’s skills and abilities to surpass everything from common fire fights to the Reapers bringing about mass extinction, which makes this particular clip of Shepard uncharacteristically failing hard at their firearms training so funny.

The short clip of Commander Shepard’s huge mistake was shared by GoldStig101 on Reddit. Commander Shepard is standing at the firing range, and everything seems to be going normally until she pulls a fragmentation grenade out of her inventory and chucks it at the shooting target. Unfortunately for Shepard, the game features fairly realistic combat physics, and the grenade promptly bounces off of the target, flies back towards Shepard, bounces off the ledge closing off the shooting gallery, and then plunks down next to Shepard’s feet.
Shepard glances down at the grenade for just a split second before it explodes and the video promptly ends. The perfectly cut video is hilarious not only for the huge mistake this combat hero has made, but also because fans get to imagine their own results after the mess-up. Commenters on the video seem to be highly amused, with many comparing Shepard’s legendary status as a brilliant fighter to this accident. Others lamented the loss of the frisbee or discus-like grenades that were missing from later games. While Shepard is usually a pretty straight-laced character in the games themselves, many more referenced the many funny Mass Effect memes that have come to surround Commander Shepard, which fit the humorous tone of this video clip a little better.
Commander Shepard’s story came back to the forefront of Mass Effect with the remastered Legendary Edition of the original series trilogy in 2021. Players are still wondering if Shepard will appear in some way in Mass Effect 4, which has been teased by EA and Bioware. However, much about the game remains a mystery at this time, outside of a small teaser that was released showing Liara discovering an N7 emblem. EA is undoubtedly well aware of the popularity of Commander Shepard, but after the missteps made with Mass Effect Andromeda, it’s likely that the developers will be very careful to prevent doing anything that could tarnish Shepard’s legacy.
