The first wonder weapon ever added to a Call of Duty Zombies title, the Ray Gun could first be found hiding in the mystery box in the Call of Duty: World at War Zombies map Nacht Der Untoten. It has since been a mainstay for the franchise, appearing in almost every map since. However, Call of Duty: Vanguard launched without crucial inclusion such as Pack-a-Punch camos, score streaks, a suite of perks, and anything resembling a wonder weapon.

A few new weapons and a single new objective were introduced during Season 1, but many Zombies fans agreed that it wasn’t enough to make a substantial difference for the fledgling Call of Duty mode. Fortunately, Treyarch unveiled a Zombies roadmap ahead of the release of Call of Duty: Vanguard’s Season 2, and it made mention of two new wonder weapons coming to the title in the form of the classic Ray Gun and the Decimator Shield.

Unfortunately, after it finally debuted, players were upset to discover that the Ray Gun was weak compared to versions seen in previous installments. While the Ray Gun was a godsend in games like Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops, it acts as more of a detriment in Call of Duty: Vanguard. The unpacked version is nearly useless once the round counter hits double digits, and even the triple-packed version begins to fall off in the low twenties.

In response, Treyarch took to Twitter on February 14, the same day as the launch of Season 2, to announce that a future patch would address the effectiveness of the Ray Gun. The developer didn’t specify how the weapon will be fixed, though the underwhelming damage output seems like the most prominent thing to address. Ultimately, this seems like a negligible way to appease a Call of Duty Zombies community displeased with Terra Maledicta’s lackluster Easter egg and bonus content, but every small improvement helps.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
