The subject came up during a conversation on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show according to The Hollywood Reporter, in which Bridges was asked whether space was a possibility for how the already over-the-top series could up its stakes. He said the show’s co-host Julia Cunningham had the right intuition, but adamantly played coy when pressed about whether the Fast and Furious crew would be going into space.

As ridiculous as this setting for a primarily car-oriented action franchise would be, the movies have had a tendency to jump the shark in previous entries with scenes such as using cars to skydive. The idea of an action movie set in outer space is also not unprecedented, as recently Tom Cruise and Doug Liman have agreed to shoot a movie in space with the help of SpaceX and NASA.
All that being said, the possibility of F9 going into space will have to remain a speculative rumor for now, as the ongoing pandemic has lead to more entertainment delays. This week, Universal Pictures announced four horror movies, including The Forever Purge and Candyman, have been delayed as theaters remain closed.
F9 is currently set to premiere on April 2, 2021.
